XPD Expedition Race

Alpine Expedition Racing!

After 700+km across the rooftop of Australia, battling blizzards, driving rain, relentless fog and even a little sunshine, team Blackheart.com.au (Damon Georke, Kim Willocks, Rob Preston, Josh Street) blitzed the field finishing the expedition in 5 days and 15 hours. Their first place secures them an entry to the Adventure Racing World Championships next year. In second were team Blackheart/ Salomon (Matt Koerber, Wayne Bradbury, Andrew Fellows, Maria Plyashechko) and third was Tangerine (David Baldwin, Randall Fitzsimon, Heather Logie, Andrew Black). Congratulations in the All Male category to team Mawson (Kevin Piercy, Noel Duffy, Russell Newnham, Ricky Thackray) in first place.

The live race site has tons of photos, videos, reports etc so check out all the action.

The race kicked off in the rocky outcrops of Mt Buffalo in the Victorian High Country, with teams navigating their way through the thick fog and rain. The area received over 100mm of rain in 24 hours that played havoc on the overnight mountain bike leg and the next days 85km Bogong and Feathertop trek legs. The rain certainly made for a quick kayak down the rushing Kiewa River. Then in came the snow, with racers making their way through the high plains on bikes, but the inclement weather saw race organisers put a stop to racing for a 24 hour period while the weather eased. Racing re-commenced Sunday afternoon and it was a dash for home, a bike through the Upper Murray region, then a paddle across Lake Eucumbene and then a rocky and tough mountain bike leg taking teams through the Kosciuszko National Park to Charlotte Pass. To literally top off an amazing expedition, and the last leg had teams trek to the top of Mt Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in Australia, then down to the finish line in Thredbo.

The 6hr Enduro is a new event in 2009 so mark it in your calendars right away! Dates are set for the 5th April 2009. Why the 6hr Enduro? Two reasons, it is a great track and it is sooooooooo close to Brisbane!

Alps Epic

Epic Mountain Bike Stage Race in the Australian High Country 15-19 Mar 09

Entries are now open for the inaugural Alps Epic and the event has already had a rush of
entrants willing to be the first to experience the splendor of the Australian high country.
Entries are limited to ensure minimal impact on the fragile environment that the course
traverses. There are 200 places for individual riders with their own support crew and 50
places for individual riders selecting the Support Package provided by the organisers. With
the event already 40% full, it is expected to sell out well before entries close on
15th Feb 09.

The stage details have had a complete update on the web so check them out.

When designing the course the Summit Events team have focused on bringing you the
best mountain biking available in the area. Course designer Craig Bycroft explains “the
beauty of this format of mountain bike racing is that we have been able design the course
around the best mountain bike tracks in the Snowy Mountains. ” The course covers just under 200km with 99% of it being on dirt.

Full event details are available from the event website www.alpsepic.com.au

Bribie Island Multisport

Introducing the Bribie HALF - 26 Apr 09

The Bribie Half is a new event for 2009 and run at the same time as the full Bribie Island Multisport. The 53km race sees relay teams and individuals complete the last 4 legs of the full course. This includes a 9km trail running, 30 km mountain biking, 10 km of kayaking and a final 4km run. This is actually the exact second half of the full course, so it is a true "half" race.

The half has been designed as an easier step into multisport racing. It is perfect for a team of 4 to try out their first race. It is also great if you don't have the team mates or the time to commit to the full course. As the Bribie Half individual and team competitors complete the second half of the course, the start time is at a very reasonable 9:30am. This event certainly lends itself to those looking for a more social outing!

Latest details have been updated on the Bribie Island Multisport website.

There is a description of each leg on the race web site.

8Hr Enduro Mountain Bike Race

Dates Updated for 2009 - 27 Sep 09

Over 400 riders, including 75 kids, had a blast at the first 8hr Enduro Mountain Bike Race in Brisbane this year. After this great success, the 8hr Enduro will be back better than ever in 2009.

The dates have been set for the 27th September 2009. A week earlier than in 08, the 8hr Enduro will see huge numbers of riders experience the awesome trails at the Slickers Mountain Bike track.

The kids race was also such a success that each of the mountain bike events run by Geocentric Outdoors at the Slickers property will now include one. In addition to this, the dedicated trail maintenance and building crew plan to set to work with their shovels to make some improvements to the bigger kids track. These include a better trail along the whole track, benching a section along the traverse and more defined corners at the bottom of the track. So kids, you will have races at the 6hr Enduro on 5 Apr 09, at Insomnia on 27 Jun 09 and the 8hr Enduro 18 Oct 09!

Mountain Designs GeoQuest - 48hr Adv Race

Forster, Barrington Tops and White Water for 2009! 5-8 Jun 09

Organisers are exited to announce that the 2009 Mountain Designs GeoQuest course will take in highlights of the Barrington Tops and Forster areas. White water elements will be included for the first time in the race's history using inflatable craft. Steep canyons, large lake systems, high mountains and some of the tallest trees in the state characterise this superb region. More details will be released early in the New Year at the event web site www.geocentricoutdoors.com.au

Mountain Designs GeoQuest 48hr is Australia's premier adventure race. It involves 48+hrs of non-stop endurance racing in the major disciplines of trekking, mountain biking and kayaking. Mixed, Male or Female teams of four must navigate their way through an arduous 200+km course that is only revealed to them the evening before the race. The race is moved each year to a different location with exciting new challenges for the teams.

The Geo-Half adventure race is run at the same time as the Mountain Designs GeoQuest. It covers only half the distance but teams have the full 48hrs to complete it. The legs will be challenging, but with the additional time available to complete the half course, teams have a greater chance to reach the finish line. It is NOT a 24hr race; you have the full 48 hours to complete the course. Boats, paddles and PFDs are provided.

Area51 Adventure Racing Queensland

Event changes for 2009

After 3 years of running the ARQ series, Geocentric Outdoors has decided to put some of the series events into hibernation for 12 months for a well earned rest. Two of the series events will still be run in 2009, One Night in Vegas and Hells Bells (with the addition of Fairy Bells -see details below). While it has been awesome fun building the shorter events and an adventure racing following in SE QLD, Geocentric has decided to focus more on the longer adventure races in 09 such as XPD, the Mountain Designs GeoQuest and the Hells Bells/Fairy Bells events.

ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS - Friday 13th February. The extremely popular urban race in the middle of Brisbane. Also part of the City Raid series.

HELLS BELLS - South East Queensland's premier adventure race for the last 5 years, Hells Bells will again challenge the toughest competitors over a 24+hr race format. At a great new location in 2009 it will be appealing for interstate visitors with a transfer package being planned so teams can "fly in/ fly out". Weekend 17/18 October 2009.

FAIRY BELLS - A new event, this 12 hr adventure race is run at the same time as Hells Bells and is designed as a great step into longer races. Saturday 17th October 2009. The format will see all teams racing for 10-12 hours.
