XPD Expedition Race

Cairns to Host XPD 5th Edition!

Organisers are excited to announce that Cairns, and the surrounding area of tropical North Queensland, has been chosen to host the 5th edition of XPD. This international expedition adventure race will bring 200+ national and international athletes to Australia from 17-28 May 2010. It will be “as much an expedition as a race”.

Race Director Craig Bycroft said “Tropical North Queensland offers the ideal location to host the 5th edition of XPD. We plan to take competitors through the Great Barrier Reef and nearby islands, the rich and diverse rainforests of the wet tropics, over waterfalls and cascades that feed crystal clear rivers, across lakes of the tablelands and through eucalypt woodlands of the Eastern savannah country. We even plan to incorporate some of the iconic legs undertaken in the Eco-Challenge of 97”

XPD is open to mixed, all male or all female teams of four from around the world. The exact course is kept secret until 24hrs before the start. Then with much excitement and anticipation, teams are provided a course booklet and their race maps. The course booklet contains the location of each of the race checkpoints. Once teams start, racing is 24 hours per day; teams choose when and where they will sleep. The winning team is expected to trek, mountain bike and kayak the 700km course in 4-5 days. All other teams will be permitted up to 10 days to complete the expedition without mid-race cut offs. XPD will be challenging for first time racers and experienced teams alike.

XPD receives generous support from Casio, Macpac, Adventure Racing World Series and Sleepmonsters.

Bribie Island Multisport

08 Winners Back to Defend Their Titles.

Glenn Kirby and Jacqui Kelly are back amongst the starters set to defend their overall wins in the solo categories last year. It won't be easy for them both with many determined challengers! Bruce Thiele (3rd last year) and Sam Stow (4th last year) have been training hard with their sights set on first place. Jacqui will have to watch out for a number of new comers to the solo category who placed well in teams last year.

The Bribie Island Multisport has proved popular this year and numbers are up by 45%. In it's first year the Bribie Half has proved a hit particularly in the solo category. Look out for the half to get even bigger in the future.

Race records could take a tumble this year as well with favorable tidal conditions in the passage. This means that the field of kayakers should be paddling with the tide as the make their way North in the morning, the tide will turn, and they will again be assisted on their paddle South in the afternoon.

Latest details have been updated on the Bribie Island Multisport website.

Late entries are still open until the 22nd April 09.

A wet track (though thankfully clear skies) saw over 230 muddy and brave riders compete in the inaugural 6hr Enduro Mountain Bike Race in Brisbane on the 5 April 2009. The final results are now out and a huge congratulations to all who took part as well as all category place getters. In particular Once Were Couriers for their impressive overall win with 16 laps. Close behind in 2nd overall was Numb Nuts then Bike Riders in third. Overall top solo male was Werner Wilson with 15 laps and Kim Beckinsale won the solo female with 13 Laps. At the other end of the field the race saw over 30 first time riders racing in all categories.

Jeff Toohey had the fastest male lap in 17:50 mins and a Kim Beckinsale had the quickest female lap in 24.09 mins.

Race photos by Steve and Leanne from Astro Visual are now up and available for purchase http://www.astrovisual.com.au/

The kids races were a great success and will be a feature of all Geocentric mountain bike races. So too for the coffee van, food and jumping castle. Overall an awesome day and the 6hr Enduro will certainly become a feature of the mountain biking calendar in Brisbane.
